Eskrima (also known as Arnis and in the West sometimes as Kali) is an umbrella term for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines, which emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons and various improvised weapons as well as various efficent techniques of unarmed combat.
Unarmed Combat is divided into these aspects:
Panantukan:
Is the boxing component of Eskrima. It consists of upper-body striking techniques such as punches, elbows, headbutts and shoulder strikes.
Panantukan is not a sport, but rather a street-oriented fighting system. The techniques have not been adapted for safety or conformance to a set of rules for competition, thus it can also be called "dirty street fighting".Common targets include the biceps, triceps, eyes, nose, jaws, temples, groin, ribs, spine, and the back of the neck.
Pananjakman/ Sikaran:
Is the kicking component of Eskrima.
It is the art of low line kicks and the disruption and infliction of pain and damage of the opponent's legs.
Dumog:
Dumog is the Filipino style of wrestling and Kina Mutai is a subsystem in which biting and eye gouging are used through extensive grappling.
Techniques include a variety of pushes, pulls, weight shifts and joint locks designed to "move" the opponent, often taking advantage of their weight and direction of force to throw them off balance.
Armed Combat is divided in these aspects:
Solo/ Double stick
Heavy/ long staff
Bladed weapons
Knife
Flexible and Improvised Weapons
